What is a Child Advocacy Center?
A Child Advocacy Center (CAC) is a child-friendly facility where law enforcement, child protective services, prosecutors, and mental health professionals work as a team to support children who are victims of child abuse and neglect. By providing services in one safe location, we reduce trauma and help children begin their journey toward healing.
How to Talk to Your Child Before Their Forensic Interview
Preparing your child for their visit is an important step in helping them feel safe. Our goal is to reduce anxiety and set clear, gentle expectations. Use the following language to guide your conversation.
Keep it Simple and Direct
Explain where you are going in child-friendly terms: 'We are going to a special place that is built just for kids to talk. You'll meet someone whose job is to talk to children and listen to what they have to say.'
Give Permission to Talk
Let your child know it is okay to tell their story: 'It’s important to tell the truth about what happened. This person is friendly and it's okay for you to tell them everything, even the difficult parts.'
Provide Comfort & Reassurance
Ensure your child knows they aren't in trouble: 'You did nothing wrong. I will be right here in the building waiting for you the whole time you are talking with your new friend.'
Avoid Asking Questions
It’s important that children tell their story for the first time in a recorded, neutral setting. Try not to interview them yourself or suggest answers. Simply support them and leave the questions for the visit.
